You brain is...60 years old
Your brain can focus for an average of 10 minutes.
This is in theory as most adults have just an eight-second attention span before getting distracted.
Too often you stop thinking about one thing and engage with another – a process that has been estimated to take 25 minutes every time you do it.
You might think that you are able to listen to your friend and respond to that text. But you can’t.
You are shifting the focus of your attention so rapidly that you never give yourself enough time to get in gear to begin with. When was the last time you spent 25 minutes just doing one thing?
Not only this makes you unproductive, but it is also affecting your ability to think and problem solve. It’s is also mentally exhausting.
First, it’s important to mention that this is not you. We all have around 50,000 separate thoughts each day. That’s some 35 thoughts per minute, or about one new thought every two seconds.
And our mind is wired to wander. Distraction is our default mode.
The good news is that you can improve your focus with practice.
You can rebuild your attention span, get your focus back, reduce your stress, improve your memories and reclaim a good night's sleep.
Focus is the skill that helps you draw your attention to just one thing in the midst of distractions. It then helps you sustain the energy you need to reach your goal and live the life that you want instead of letting the external world decide where you pay attention to.
